My Story

My name is Megan Sartori and in 2022-23, I created this beautiful Butterfly Sanctuary for my Gold Award Project. The Gold Award is a prestigious award that Girl Scouts can earn by addressing an issue they care about and acting on it. I am so grateful to have been able to work with the Montessori Public School to make this happen!

I chose my project because I wanted to support the local butterfly population here in Arlington, Virginia. I have always enjoyed gardening and am passionate about the well being of our environment. Butterflies are extremely important to our environment because of their role as pollinators. I am super thankful to have been able to work with the Montessori Public School as they share the same passion for butterfly well being! Did you know that their mascot is a Monarch butterfly?

Special thanks to Mrs. Stork for helping to organize this project and to Mr. Russey's 4th and 5th grade class for painting the Butterfly Houses and butterfly stakes. Thank you to all the volunteers who spent their weekend helping plant the garden to make this project come to life! By creating this Butterfly Sanctuary, butterflies are supported locally, and students like you are able to learn more about them!
